Ripping CD’s is Illegal!!!!!

Posted by Kris under In the News

RiAA SucksWell according to the RIAA’s henchmen it is, but the courts will decide if that is true.  The RIAA claims that when you rip a CD you are making an unauthorized copy of their property and even if it is for your personal use you are violating copyright law.  In other words you pay your hard earned money for a CD which more than likely only has a few songs on it that you actually wish to purchase, you now want to listen to said CD while jogging and rip it to mp3 format to put on your handy dandy MP3 player and suddenly you are a criminal????  Since Apple itself estimates that only about 4% of the music found on iPods are songs purchased though the iTunes music store they could be liable for the consumer’s use of their product.  Where has the legal system of our country gone?  Why it is that I no longer have the ability to use the property I purchase in the ways I desire?  Because of the actions of the RIAA I have not purchased a CD in years and no I don’t download music from P2P sites or obtain music by any other illegal (or questionably illegal) means.

Put simply, the RIAA has to catch you first if they have any hope of stopping this. It’s insanity, and even copyright law is still on our side, at least for now.

You have the right to make copies for personal use, and until this gets to court it’s nothing but scaremongering.

Well, lets just hope the courts uphold the law and don’t buckle to the recording industry. Property law is what it is I can do what I want with the property i’ve purchased legally. But, the RIAA likes to say that you aren’t purchasing property as in a CD you are paying for the right to listen to that CD. Legal mumbo-jumbo but lets just hope precedent isn’t sit here.
